Neuromodulators

What are Neuromodulators?

NeuromodulatorsNeuromodulators are non-surgical cosmetic treatments designed to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face by relaxing the facial muscles. They are most commonly used to treat wrinkles that develop over time, such as frown lines between the brows, crow’s feet around the eyes, and horizontal forehead lines. At Art of Skin Dermatology, Tania Cohen, DMSC, PA-C, offers neuromodulator treatments to help patients achieve smoother, younger-looking skin.

Neuromodulators like Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are FDA-approved and have a long history of safe and effective use in cosmetic dermatology. These treatments are ideal for individuals looking to reduce the signs of aging without surgery. They provide natural-looking results that allow for full facial expression while softening unwanted wrinkles.

Before your treatment, a consultation is conducted to determine your skin type, facial structure, and specific goals. This personalized approach ensures the treatment plan is tailored to your needs, delivering the best possible outcome.

HOW DO NEUROMODULATORS WORK?

By blocking nerve signals, neuromodulators prevent specific facial muscles from contracting. Over time, repeated muscle movements, such as frowning or squinting, lead to wrinkles and fine lines forming. By relaxing these muscles, neuromodulators help smooth the skin’s surface, reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles.

During the procedure, small amounts of the neuromodulator are injected into the targeted muscles. As a result of botulinum toxin type A, muscles are relaxed, preventing them from contracting and creating new wrinkles. The treatment is most effective in areas of the face where muscle movement is responsible for lines and creases, such as the forehead, around the eyes, and between the eyebrows.

Neuromodulators are also used for other cosmetic concerns, including reducing a “gummy” smile, softening a square jawline, or lifting the brows. Typically, results last 3 to 4 months, and regular treatments can maintain a youthful, refreshed appearance.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING A NEUROMODULATOR TREATMENT SESSION?

A typical neuromodulator treatment session is quick and convenient, often completed in 15 to 30 minutes. The session begins with a consultation to determine which areas of the face would benefit most from the treatment and to discuss your aesthetic goals. It is important for your provider to assess the structure of your face and the strength of the muscles responsible for wrinkles to ensure the injections are placed in the correct locations.

Once the treatment plan is finalized, your provider will cleanse the treatment area using a topical numbing cream to ensure comfort. A fine needle will inject small amounts of the neuromodulator into the targeted muscles. The number of injections and the placement depend on the severity of the wrinkles and the area being treated.

Since neuromodulators are non-surgical and minimally invasive, no downtime is required. It is possible for most patients to return to their regular activities immediately after treatment, making it an ideal choice for busy people.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER A NEUROMODULATOR TREATMENT?

After a neuromodulator treatment, patients may experience bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection sites. These side effects are temporary and usually resolve within a few hours to a few days. It’s crucial not to rub or massage the treated areas after the product has been applied to prevent it from spreading.

Results from neuromodulators typically begin to appear within 3 to 7 days, with full effects visible after about two weeks. Therefore, the skin will appear smoother, and lines and wrinkles in the treated areas will be reduced. Your facial expressions will remain natural, but the wrinkles caused by muscle movement will be reduced.

Neuromodulators’ results last 3 to 4 months, after which the muscle activity gradually returns, and wrinkles may reappear. To maintain the effects, follow-up treatments are recommended every few months. Your provider will create a maintenance plan tailored to your goals, helping you enjoy long-lasting, youthful results.

WHAT IS THE COST OF NEUROMODULATORS?

The cost of neuromodulator treatments varies depending on the areas being treated and the product needed to achieve the desired results. During your consultation at Art of Skin Dermatology, we will assess your needs and goals, creating a customized treatment plan that includes a detailed breakdown of the costs.

Neuromodulators are cost-effective for reducing wrinkles and fine lines, offering long-lasting results without surgery. You can maintain a smooth, youthful appearance over time by incorporating regular treatments into your skincare routine.
